FLOSS and the idea of software freedom is a political statement. Politics also evolve as humanity evolves.

At it's heart though, you can't go wrong with the idea of Freedom of the Commons over individual freedom.

Freedom means different things to different people. Humanity survives by cooperation, so individual liberty is meaningless if it comes at the expense of others. Like everything it's a balance.

There's a reason for the golden rule.

@onepict having said that, I firmly believe the Golden Rule is flawed in its assumption that everyone wants to be treated the same.

@mattcen @onepict That's an interesting interpretation! I'm not sure everyone interprets it that way.

If I look at the Wikipedia article, it's listing a whole lot of different embodiments of the same idea from across cultures:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_R

I like one of the Taoist versions here for its clarity: "Regard your neighbor's gain as your own gain, and your neighbor's loss as your own loss."

This interpretation is not assuming everyone wants the same.

@jens
Ooh I like that, it plays into the freedom of the commons philosophy and cooperation.
