Various videos are up, including seminars. Seminars good. I did not see most of them "for some reason or another"

The story of how we got seminars is a good one, I share that later (:

Please, /please/, don't make /only/ videos, y'all! Make text articles too!

Text is even /easier/ to make it's just /always/ video

always

Not everyone can do videos. Especially long videos that we're expected to Sit Down And Focus Entirely On which means engaging speech parsing AND we can't easily back up and reread things like we could text and we /can't slow down/ like we could text and we can't skim like we could text and just

there's often /no point/ to it being a video and we /can't/.

okay, curiosity time:

someone asks you to give them a single piece of advice. just one. whatever comes to mind first.

what advice do you give them?

I don't know who needs to hear this, but to the rest of us, all your thoughts that go uncommunicated are indistinguishable from no thoughts at all.

@NGIZero Consequently, I'm not as happy about that milestone as I should be. Code is peppered with TODO and FIXME that I'd normally clear up before sending anyone anything. Ugh.

But on the bright side, a bunch of code boilerplate is in place that if things keep going as they are, it should not be another year until the next milestone.

One hopes. 😁

@NGIZero by that time, the hygiene rules meant kids' groups couldn't mix, which meant teachers couldn't be reassigned flexibly, which meant that the daycare reduced hours.

Oh, and then it was closed for summer, which I guess is normal.

Now I have about 25-35 hours a week available on average, 20 of which go for my researcher job. That stings for the project.

Also, that job is about 50% meetings. Interesting stuff, really, but it means what time I have is also subdivided.

@NGIZero Now this isn't a complaint, much less a begpost. But it is venting.

First, the pandemic meant my kids were home instead of at daycare.

Then, not finishing milestones meant I had no income. There was meant to be relief funds, but they came late, so we've been living off my wife's salary.

Then, I had to take on part-time work. That's fine, really, because the work is somewhat related.

But it meant I had to divide my hours. Initially not too much, but it ramped up.

I just finished another milestone for @NGIZero for .

I wouldn't write about this normally. But the last milestone I finished under that agreement was almost a year ago.

This frustrates me to no end. Of course, I calculated the time I'd need per milestone pretty tightly. I needed about seven weeks instead of the four-ish I figured.

When I submitted the proposal, I was ready to work at this full time, 40h/week, give or take. That was just before COVID-19.

New German word dropped recently and I want to share it with my English speaking friends. It's called "Mütend", its a mashup of müde (tired) and wütend (angry) and I think its the perfect word for these times.
I'm very mütend lately.

:boost_ok:

Because I've been railing at and a couple of times in recent weeks: I've given up maintenance of my Python OpenAPI tool github.com/jfinkhaeuser/prance

The point I'm trying to make here is that Ronny, the new maintainer, is also a RedHatter, just like the guys who are pushing Rust into the Python ecosystem.

I have nothing against the company or its employees. I do have something against people acting irresponsibly, and throwing racist remarks around.

Thank you, Ronny!

Bill Gates continuing to do evil under the guise of philanthropy.

"When Oxford University began work on its covid vaccine, it promised that the resulting work would be patent-free, with an active tech-transfer assistance program so that developing nations could manufacture their own supplies....

....That promise was broken. The Gates Foundation pushed the racist lie that poor people can't make safe vaccines - despite world-leading production facilities in the Global South - and convinced the university to sell exclusive rights to Astrazeneca...."
